Frequently Asked Questions

The most common questions we’ve heard have to do with payment. Please see our “Services” page for practice details, access plans and fees. We are striving for a simple, “no hidden costs” experience. That way, we can focus all of our attention on your health.

Here we answer some common questions. If we haven’t provided all of the information you’re seeking, please send us an email, and we’ll answer you directly. Stop back again, as we’ll be expanding our FAQ’s as this evolves.

How do I pay for my care at U.P. Holistic Medicine?

Cash, check, and credit cards are welcome. We participate in the “Be Local, Buy Local” program, and we have a “Loyalty Program” that provides discounts for our patients.

Will my insurance work at U.P. Holistic Medicine?

Individual insurance plans and reimbursement will vary. Talk with your health benefits coordinator or insurance agent. By choosing a health savings account (HSA) or flexible spending account (FSA), you decide how to spend your pre-tax income on healthcare you want.

Why doesn’t U.P. Holistic Medicine bill directly to my insurance like other doctor’s offices?

Simply put, we offer healthcare directly to our patients. No hidden costs. No extra time spent away from focusing on your healthcare needs. The health insurance climate, with its ever-changing rules and requirements, now represents a gigantic distraction in healthcare. We aim to simplify our work, for your health, not for the insurance industry.

Are the doctors considered “out of network” providers?

UP Holistic Medicine is considered an “out-of-network” provider by the insurance industry. This means the insurance industry has no access to your medical records, and is unable to arbitrarily change your medications. Their shifting decisions about what they will or will not pay for no longer apply to your healthcare with us. This is one of the most liberating aspects of the direct care we provide. It is just you and your doctor making your healthcare decisions.

What if I have Medicare?

While we are not Medicare providers, patients with Medicare are welcome at UP Holistic Medicine. You need only sign an annual waiver, declaring neither you nor your doctor will directly bill Medicare for our services. Medicare works as usual for all other costs related to your care outside of our office. For example, Quest labs done in our office fall under Medicare-covered expenses.

Will my U.P. Holistic Medicine doctor take care of me in the hospital?

We will not be providing direct care for hospitalized patients, but routinely visit them while in the hospital. In the event of hospitalization, we remain available and involved in communicating with our patients and families, emergency physicians, hospitalists, and other specialists. Communication is essential to seamlessly transition patients back into our out-of-hospital practice. We are outpatient care specialists, with a more nimble model and an eye on keeping people out of the hospital. We focus on building and maintaining core wellness in our patients. Our practice model is designed so each doctor at UP Holistic Medicine will have a smaller, more familiar clientele. In caring for 500-800 patients, each doctor ensures more time for their patients, instead of managing a standard clinical patient load in the 2000-3000 range. We value time and connection.

Does Dr. Doughty do procedures?

Yes, office procedures such as skin lesion biopsy, removal or freezing, wart treatment, joint aspiration, and laceration repair are available.

Are same day appointments available?

Same-day appointments are helpful for many health issues that catch you by surprise. Whether child or adult, patients need to already be established in our practice, for ease of same-day appointments. While the Full Access plan will maximize access, the Visit-Based plan will also allow for same or next-day appointments. While Walk-In clinics have their place, we are old-fashioned about connection, access and availability. To that end, we offer a special “acute care visit” for $60 to our Visit-Based patients.

Do you see babies and children?

We welcome babies and children into our practice! It’s what we’ve been doing for our entire careers, caring for families. Kids deserve a strong start to life, but increasingly have more allergies, asthma, food sensitivities, attention deficit, and other challenges. Many children’s health issues benefit profoundly from a functional medicine approach.

Do you offer prenatal care and attend births?

We have expanded our thinking as to what comprises an ideal foundation for healthy procreation! At this time, there are no full-scope prenatal/birth options at UP Holistic Medicine. After twenty years of catching babies, Dr. Doughty said goodbye to that wonderful part of being a family doctor. However, pregnant and postpartum women are welcome to schedule specific consult visits, for health/breastfeeding concerns with a functional/integrative medicine approach. Families seeking preconception health guidance are encouraged to schedule a consultation at UP Holistic Medicine.

Do you offer employer-based plans?
